Benjamin
Banneker was a free black man during colonial times.
The
self-educated Banneker studied mathematics, the stars and even
published an almanac that he wrote.
He also helped the new
government of America plan its permanent capitol in
Washington
D.C. He was part of the survey team who plotted the streets
and
boundaries of the new capitol. Banneker is often described as the first
black mathematician and astronomer in America.
